Connect Devices to mBlock 5

The mBlock 5 supports a large family of devices, not only those by Makeblock, but also those by other manufacturers. You can connect most of the devices to mBlock 5 through mBlock 5's built-in guidance; some devices require you to follow its own product guide to connect to your computer.

1. Connect Devices through mBlock 5

The mBlock 5 provides two methods to connect to your device: via the USB or via Bluetooth 4.0.

Note: only one device can be connected at a time. A new connection will lead to the disconnection of the existing one.

Method One: Via the USB

You can connect your device directly to your PC via a USB cable. (You can use Makeblock Bluetooth Adapter to realize a wireless USB connection)

1. Use the USB Cable that came with the device to connect your device to a USB port on your computer.

2. Refer to your device's guide. Make sure your device is successfully connected to your computer.

3. Power on your device.

4. Choose your device, and click "Connect". The following is an example.

5. The Connect Device window will pop up. Choose "USB". The serial port of your device will automatically be detected. Click "Connect". The following is an example.

Notes:
- If you have several devices connected to the computer, choose from the drop-down serial port list the port of the specific device you want to connect to.
- If you want to see all connectable devices, please check the box for "Show all connectable devices".

6. When connection is complete, please check your device is successfully connected to mBlock 5. If not, please disconnect current device and try again.

Makeblock Bluetooth Adapter

Makeblock Bluetooth Adapter is a special gadget for Makeblock's products to connect to your computer via the USB without the use of a USB cable. Please refer to the product guide for detailed guide.

Method Two: Via Bluetooth 4.0

You can connect your device wirelessly to your PC via Bluetooth 4.0. System requirements are as follows:

  • Windows: the version of Bluetooth must be 4.0; for other Bluetooth versions, a Bluetooth 4.0 adapter is recommended (refer to Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter for detailed instructions)
  • Mac OS: support most Mac OS models

Note: refer to Check Bluetooth Version to see how to check the Bluetooth version of your Windows PC.

1. Power on your device.

2. Turn on Bluetooth on your PC.

  • Windows: on the task bar, select action center > Bluetooth
  • Mac OS: choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth

3. Choose your device, and click "Connect". The following is an example.

4. The Connect Device window will pop up. Choose "Bluetooth 4.0". The serial port of your device will automatically be detected. Click "Connect". The following is an example.

Notes:
- If you have several devices, choose from the drop-down list the specific device you want to connect to.
- If you want to see all connectable devices, please check the box for "Show all connectable devices".

5. When connection is complete, please check your device is successfully connected to mBlock 5. If not, please disconnect current device and try again.

2. Follow Product Guide to Connect Devices

Some devices produced by other manufacturers require you to follow its own product guide to connect to mBlock 5, such as BBC's micro:bit. Please refer to specific product guide to connect the device to your computer.

3. Bluetooth 4.0 Instructions for Windows Users

For users running mBlock 5 on a Windows PC, you may consult the following instructions to use Bluetooth 4.0 connection.

If your Windows PC uses a Bluetooth version other than Bluetooth 4.0, a Bluetooth 4.0 adapter is required to connect to your device.

Please check the Bluetooth version of your computer first.

Note:
Installing Bluetooth 4.0 driver will automatically disable system Bluetooth of your computer; you have to uninstall the Bluetooth 4.0 driver first to restore system Bluetooth, referring to Uninstall Bluetooth 4.0 Driver for instructions.


Check the Bluetooth Version of a Windows PC

To check the Bluetooth version, see following steps:

  1. Press Win+X to open the Start Menu and select "Device Manager".

  2. Locate "Bluetooth", where you will see several Bluetooth devices.

  3. Select your Bluetooth brand and right-click to check the "Properties".

  4. Go to the "Advanced" tab and check the firmware version. The LMP number shows the version of Bluetooth your PC is using.

Install Bluetooth 4.0 Driver on a Windows PC

To install driver for the Bluetooth 4.0 adapter, follow the steps below:

  1. Download Zadig tool

  2. Run Zadig tool, choose "Options" and click "List All Devices"

  3. Choose your device from the drop-down list and click "Replace Driver".

Note:
After the installation is complete, if Bluetooth 4.0 connection is not working, one possible reason is that the bluetooth module of your computer is not support by mBlock 5. Please contact support@makeblock.com with the Hardware Id of your PC's bluetooth. Our engineer will update the bluetooth support library. After the update is done, you can restart your mBlock 5 to use Bluetooth 4.0 connection.

Follow the instructions below to check Hardware Id:

  1. Press Win+X to open the Start Menu and select "Device Manager".

  2. Under "Universal Serial Bus devices", find "Bluetooth Radio".

  3. Right-click "Bluetooth Radio", and choose "Properties".

  4. Select "Details", and choose "Hardware Ids" from the Property drop-down list.

Uninstall Bluetooth 4.0 Driver and Restore System Bluetooth

  1. Press Win+X to open the Start Menu and select "Device Manager".

  2. Under "Universal Serial Bus devices", find "Bluetooth Radio".

  3. Right-click "Bluetooth Radio", and choose "Properties".

  4. Select "Driver" and then click "Uninstall Device".

  5. Check the box of "Delete the driver software for this device", and then click "Uninstall".

  6. After the uninstallation is complete, restart your computer.
